The .SE country-code top-level domain extension was started in 1986 and assigned to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration procedure was quite restrictive, so a very low number of domain names were purchased. Persons were permitted to buy only one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was required, i.e. only Swedish individuals, commercial entities and organizations were able to order a .SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was loosened notably and, consequently, the number of dot SE domains has been mounting each year.
